But Vero is Different!

by Nic Stover

Recently, I posted what I thought was a rather dull video. It was taken from my car as I drove to the East over the 17th Street Bridge in Vero Beach. I took not for what it showed but for what it didn't show.

Back in the early '70's, a couple of 12-story building were constructed in this lovely small town on Florida's Atlantic coast. No sooner had the dust cleared than residents were banging on the doors of city hall demanding that the building of such "towers" be stopped. This civic activism resulted in a law that prohibits the building of anything over 35 feet tall in the zone along the ocean. While this can go a little higher elsewhere, the building laws are even more strict now than they were in the early '70's. This means that what you didn't see in this video of Vero Beach was the typical Florida-wall of skyscraper condos that block any respectable view of the ocean, plus all the beauty and serenity that brings.

I am delighted to tell you that the video received over 2,000 views in the first 24 hours. Not bad for a dull video.

Nobody was endangered in the making of the video. AI was not involved in the writing of this blog except to correct my atrocious spelling.
